8/30/09 – Field Training

Practicing her retrieve... good girl!

Here is a link to Roxie’s training session today.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDz5rzXNVGw I only tapped her once when she took a step after the shot.  She is entered into a hunt test in 2 weeks at Hastings.  I was trying to get out to Hastings today to train in the fields that the tests are run in so that I could hopefully remind her that Hastings is a place to hunt, not play.  But no such luck, no one was available to train with me so I kept my pre-scheduled session with Brad.  In light of how she did at the last hunt tests with Chukar, I asked Brad to put out a chukar to see how she would do with “bad birds”.  He was reluctant to do so because I doesn’t want to train a dog to work with bad birds.  I reminded him of all those times that he says he WANTS the dog to break so it can learn, this is one of those instances.  Put out a chuckar and see how she does.  If she breaks, then it’s a learning opportunity.  Well, she didn’t break so no learning.  But she did show she knows how to handle a chukar.  She stayed at least 20 ft away from it.
